FAQ's

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about our services. If you have a question that has not been answered below, please contact us.

What is reward based training?

Simply, the pet is rewarded for performing the behavior we want. A reward (something the pet loves) when timed properly will reinforce the behavior just performed. Reinforced behavior gets repeated. Commonly we utilize clicker training for effective and efficient training.

Using reward based training to teach new behaviors or change undesirable ones creates the most successful learning environment for your pet and eliminates the need to use fear, force, pain or intimidation.

What is clicker training?

Clicker training is based on marking a desired behavior followed by a reward. A clicker is a mechanical device that makes a ‘click’ sound. This sound is something that the pet can easily discern from environmental noise around him. The pet quickly learns that the click = treat and start to associate what they were doing at the time of the click. We find this method to be the clearest form of communication when teaching your pet a new behavior.

Clicker Training Benefits:

  • Effective and efficient
  • Based on the science of how animals learn
  • Strengthens bond with pet
  • Long term retention of behavior
  • Promotes thinking and creativity in your pet
  • Creates pets that love to learn
  • Mistakes are okay
  • It is FUN!

Is there a guarantee my pet’s behavior will improve after working with you?

There are many factors contributing to behavior including but not limited to genetics, socialization, learning experiences, and environmental factors. For these reasons, it would be unethical for me or anyone to guarantee the outcome of your pet’s behavior.

What can I expect from One to One Coaching?

Our services are based on the expectation that you want to be an active participant in the training process. Based on our initial assessment, we will create a training plan for you and your pet, and then guide you through each step. We itemize training exercises after each meeting to help keep you focused. Supplemental handouts and videos are provided as needed. We are here to support your behavior needs with compassion and understanding. This is also a fantastic way to build and improve your relationship with your pet.

How much time do I need to train daily?

Time expected to practice new behaviors with your pet is 5-10 minute sessions at least 3 times a day. However your pet is always learning so we will help you identify opportunities to incorporate training during your daily life.

How long will training take?

Training is a process and changing behavior takes time. The pace of progress is truly dictated by your pet’s responses as well as comfort level.  The training process is dynamic so staying in frequent communication with us during training services is important.  If we make can adjustments to the training promptly, you will achieve your pet behavior goals as quickly as possible.

What can I expect from Classes?

Classes are small, commonly 3 – 5 owner/pet participants to ensure some personal attention and successful learning for you and your pet. Information needed for each class will be provided so there will be less talking and more training during our time together. Depending on the exercise, you will either take turns one at a time or practice at the same time as other participants. Time will be allotted for questions and short discussions at each meeting.

Do you do presentations for small groups?

Yes, we offer interactive presentations for small groups including pet professionals and shelter/rescue/fosters. Learning is for humans only but special appearances by your pets are encouraged when meetings are virtual!

Topics can be customized for your specific pet behavior or training needs.
